Pushkar

The holy city of Pushkar in Ajmer district of Rajasthan,India. Pushkar, the picturesque pilgrim city, nests amidst the majestic Aravli ranges and bordered by the Nag Pahar or the Snake Hills and the edge of the Thar Dessert.

Pushkar lies on the shores of the sacred pushkar lake. The pushkar lake has 52 Ghats where pilgrims descend to the lake to bath in the sacred waters.

Puskar is associated with several myths and legends. Lord Bramha in search of a suitable place for a vedic yagna (holy fire). While contemplating, a lotus fell down from his hand on earth and water spurted from three places, one of them was Pushkar and Bramha decided to perform the yagna here.

Once the sun sets behind the hills, the entire atmosphere changes with the ringing of the bells and prayers in the temples.

The sleepy town of Pushkar comes to life during the annual Pushkar fair the environment is truly electrifying. Men in their colourful turbans and women wearing vivid odhanis, browse through the road side bazaars.

All roads lead to the sacred lake and it seems as if a tide of vibrant colours is flowing through the town.

The ideal time to visit this city is during the Pushkar Fair which is held in the month of November during a particular full moon. (Kartik Purnima) It is a major attraction of religion, as tourist from all parts of the world gather here for the colourful fair.

The fascinating fair is the largest cattle fair of the country and is perhaps the most colourful animal fair in the world.

The vast collection of camels and horses for sale is numerous. There were plenty of camel carts, as well as camels being decorated or shorn to create exquisite pattern on their bodies.

The most striking feature is the cattle competition. Imagine the entire limelight on the colourfully decorated cattle. There is a camel beauty contest, camel and horse dance and many other cultural events.

The fair is India’s greatest tribal gathering, featuring performances by musicians and dancers from the Thar Desert.

How can we forget the food?? The street food was really good!
